Bran is a fascinating, historical village - home to the impressive 14th
Century Bran Castle, built high up on a rock above the village. The
castle has become famous in recent years by its connections with Vlad
Tepes, "The Impaler" and his fictional counterpart "Count Dracula".
There is nothing to see at the castle in connection with these two
characters, but the castle is impressive in its own right. A myriad of
defensive towers, battlements, small rooms, alcoves, passages and
balconies surrounds a small inner courtyard.
In the 1920's Bran became home to Queen Marie of Romania (1875-1938),
Queen Victoria of England's granddaughter. Marie's body is buried at
Curtea de Arges, but her heart was entombed in a gold casket at Bran for
many years. It is now in the National History Museum in Bucuresti, but
the box in which the casket was placed can still be seen in Bran.
